Asbestos was widely used as a construction material in 
residential and commercial buildings before identifying the danger
of asbestos in 70’s and 80’s.  It is also used as a key material for 
shipbuilding and automotive. Even after knowing the health risks 
of asbestos fibers, still there are many structures that are built 
with the asbestos material.

Identification and monitoring the asbestos is not an easy 
task as asbestos is made of microscopic fibers that cannot be 
seen by the naked eye. In order to identify it, you need special 
equipment or to know what materials investigate, look for any 
manufacturer labels, and consult experts when in doubt. The only 
visually identifiable asbestos products are corrugated cement 
roofing sheets.

Simple methods to eradicate asbestos completely are:

1. Possible methods to Identifying Asbestos Materials

 Note the date on the material. 

 Look at joints of material. 

 Analyze or observe surface patterns. 

 Inspect exterior building materials. 

 Investigate interior panels (as
asbestos material have different
patterns). 

 Check appliances and finishing materials.

 Assess the location. 

After identifying the presence of asbestos in the surrounding the 
next step is to check whether it is damaged or not. Only damaged
or broken asbestos is dangerous as it spread minute fibers into 
the air and will cause harmful diseases. Proper asbestos 
awareness training and precautions will help to eradicate 
asbestos easily. 

Some common Asbestos-Containing Materials:

 Ceilings: popcorn ceilings, ceiling tiles

 Flooring: vinyl tiles, some floor tiles, select adhesives, 
carpet underlay

 Siding: shingles, stucco, transit

 Insulation: wall, attic, materials around pipes, electrical 
wires.

 Adhesives: certain joint compounds, cement, caulk

2. Ways to control the release of asbestos fibers:

Controlling measures will guide you in handling or using asbestos-
containing material properly. The main goal is to prevent or 
minimize the release of airborne asbestos fibers. The employer 
must make sure that the control plan is developed and 
implemented for their employees prevent asbestos exposure.

It is always better to leave undisturbed asbestos as it is. A 
certified asbestos awareness training will teach removal workers 
about how asbestos can be handled and disposed of, so it’s best 
to have certified individuals assess and properly take care of any 
asbestos-containing products. It is mandatory to hold a certified 
certificate by everyone those who remove or disturbing asbestos. 

Individuals with training can remove asbestos from their house, 
but it is always better to appoint an asbestos removal contractor 
with class A and class B certificate. A contractor will be able to 
determine the best plan of action to keep you and your loved 
ones safe without asbestos exposure.
