Field hockey is a fast, precise game. The ball travels low and quick, passes depend on a true bounce, and player movement relies on a surface that behaves the same way in the first minute as it does in the sixtieth. When the surface is inconsistent - a patch that slows the ball, a seam that diverts a pass, a section that drains differently from the rest - the game suffers.
