individuals have been protected if they experience a medical emergency while

However, beginning August 3, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)
will no longer accept Super Visa medical insurance that is paid for monthly. This
represents a signicant change from the policies that had been in place before
this point. What does this mean for current policyholders, pending applicants, and
their family members?
What exactly is the super visa?
Foreign parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents
are eligible to apply for a special visitor's visa known as a super visa. Many people
who now call Canada home got their start in the country as immigrants. Therefore,
their relatives may be still considered to be foreign nationals even though they
currently reside in Canada. The majority of people who come to Canada are
granted a visitor visa that is valid for six months. On the other hand, the super visa
is unique. It's a visa valid for 10 years with multiple entries that lets visitors stay for
up to 5 years at a time and gives them the option to apply for an additional 2 years
of stay.
Basically, it's a way to have your out-of-country family members visit you for an
extended period without putting undue stress on your budget in the event of any
emergency medical care.
Super Visa Medical Insurance: What Is It?
Super Visa Medical Insurance is a specialized kind of travel insurance that covers
visitors for the full duration of their time spent in Canada. It is designed to full the
requirements of the Super Visa. It contributes to the coverage of costs associated
with any medical emergencies or other types of healthcare needs that may arise
during their stay.
In most cases, expenses such as the following are covered by the Super Visa
Medical Insurance:
Treatment of a medical emergency, whether for an illness or an injury
Medication available only by prescription
Emergency dental care
Essential medical equipment (crutches, wheelchairs, slings, braces, etc.)
In addition to other diagnostic services, we oer X-rays (laboratory procedures,
bloodwork, ultrasounds, etc.)
Required ambulance services on the ground, in the air, or at sea
Treatment that comes afterwards

However, the Super Visa medical insurance coverage can change because policies
can cover a variety of costs to varying degrees.
Is it necessary to have super visa medical insurance?
Super visa holders who wish to travel to Canada for medical treatment must have
super visa medical insurance. Visitors to Canada are not eligible for coverage
under the public healthcare system (like OHIP in Ontario). Therefore, the
Government of Canada mandated that all visiting parents and grandparents who
intend to remain in Canada for extended periods must obtain this type of medical
insurance under the Super Visa program. This is done so that they will always have
access to private medical coverage if they require it.
However, it is essential to take into account the fact that this particular kind of
insurance coverage comes with several strict requirements. For example, it must

Can I Make Monthly Payments For My Super Visa Medical Insurance?
Visitors who entered Canada before August 2022 are the only ones who are
eligible to keep paying their Super Visa medical insurance premiums monthly. That
is if they had already been participating in a payment plan with their insurance
provider that required them to make a monthly payment.
However, beginning in August 2022, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada
(IRCC) will no longer accept super visa medical insurance unless the entire
premium has been paid. If this requirement is not satised, the IRCC has the
authority to refuse a visa application or even refuse entry into Canada. This rule
applies to anyone who has not yet entered Canada, including but not limited to
the following individuals:
Those who currently have applications being processed
Those individuals whose applications have been accepted but who have not yet
arrived in Canada
Those who are just starting the application process
Applicants who have not yet begun the application process
Suppose, for example, that you have already purchased super visa insurance on a
monthly payment plan, but that your application for a visa is still being processed.
In this scenario, the IRCC would not accept your Super Visa medical insurance
policy; therefore, you should get in touch with your insurer or broker to change
your policy from one that is paid monthly to one that is paid in full.
Visitors who are already in Canada and who have been paying their insurance
premiums monthly will not be impacted by this change. They do not need to be
concerned about having their premium payments for their Super visa medical
insurance revoked because of this reason; they can continue to pay those
payments as usual.
In addition, visitors who are already in Canada and who wish to apply to extend
their visa can continue to make monthly payments directly to their insurance

provider even after the visa extension has been granted.
