Making a Small Room Look Bigger
with Tiles
We're often asked which tiles work best for making a small space appear
larger. Our design experts share their best tips for selecting tiles that help
create the illusion of more space. Wondering how you can
buy bathroom accessories & tiles in Delhi or other places? Bath Affair is the
one for you.
Tile size
When it comes to renovating a small kitchen or bathroom, many consumers
are hesitant to choose big tiles. This is because it's a common misconception
that large tiles can overwhelm a tiny space and make it feel even smaller.
Wide format tiles, on the other hand, can help create the illusion of more
room by reducing the number of grout lines. A room with too many grout
lines will appear cluttered and draw the eye in.
Don't worry if you have your heart set on small format or mosaic style tiles;
there are many ways to integrate them into your design project. Consider
using different tile sizes for different areas of the room. For example, large
tiles could be used on the floor and walls, while small tiles could be used in
decorative alcoves.
Tile colour
If you want to make a small space appear larger, choosing the right color tiles
is critical. Although bold colors are trendy and can help to build depth, if
you're trying to give the impression of more room, it's best to use them
sparingly.
Pale tile colors such as white, cream, beige, or gray are recommended
because they can make a room appear lighter and brighter. Another helpful
tip is to choose a grout color that closely matches the tile's color. You can
create a smooth transition without such a stark contrast, which can make a
space appear larger.
Similarly, since it's difficult for the eye to discern where one room ends and
another begins, using the same tiles for the wall and floors or in several
rooms in a house can offer the illusion of space.
Tile finish
It's just as critical to pick the right finish as it is to pick the right color. Gloss
tiles reflect natural light, making a room appear lighter and giving the
appearance of increased space. A tile with a faint sheen or metallic finish can
be a nice compromise if you don't like gloss.
If you're decorating a small space, heavily patterned tiles may be a bad idea.
Subtle patterns are typically the most effective.
Tile laying pattern
We're seeing an increase in the number of people who choose to lay tiles in
unusual patterns. Vertical brick, chevron, herringbone, and basket weave are
all common patterns, but which one is the most successful at making a room
appear larger?
If you have a low ceiling and want to create the illusion of height, another
trick is to lay tiles vertically.
Laying planks parallel to the longest wall will help elongate a space if you've
chosen flooring that comes in planks, such as our famous Karndean series. In
a narrow corridor, this is particularly useful.
