The Classic Inca Trail Trek – Few Things to Know
When it comes to trekking, the Classic Inca Trail trek is one of the most popular in the
world, known for offering a lifetime experience. The Classic Inca Trail is the most
renowned stretch of the Inca road system that consists of a trail that measures 25,000
miles spanning north to south through Peru, Chile and Ecuador. If you are planning for
Inca Trail adventure travel and want to know more about the Classic Inca Trail trek to
Machu Picchu, then check out the post below.
What makes the Classic Inca Trail trek so iconic?
The Classic Inca Trail trek is a beautiful hike to Machu Picchu that allows you to take
delight in the views of scattered Inca ruins along the trail, the luring Andean mountains
along, with an opportunity to stand at the Sun Gate to relish the first sun rays lighting
up Machu Picchu. Inca Trail adventure travel needs proper planning and patience, if
you wish for a stress-free and life-changing hiking experience.
What will you discover on the Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu?
Wayllabamba
Wayllabamba is the endpoint of your first-day trek along the Inca Trail. Wayllabamba
implies “grassy plain” in Quechua, a perfect spot to watch the sunset behind the
marvellous Andean peaks. This unique grassy plain will make you love the stunning
spot of picturesque Andean scenery and the ancient Incan terraces winding through
the neighbouring mountainsides.
Llulluchapampa Valley
Begin your first part of the second-day journey hiking through the charming Valley of
Llulluchapampa. While you ascend in altitude gradually, you will enjoy the perfect
views of eye-catching snow-capped cliffs.
Hiram Bingham did not discover Machu Picchu
Hiram Bingham arrived in 1911, and he found in the Temple Of The Three windows a
painting that said “ Agustin Lizarraga 1902”. Agustin Lizarraga was a farmer from the
Santa Teresa town next to Machu Picchu who unfortunately fell into the Urubamba
River in 1912 and died.
Runkuracay
Runkuracay is an oval structure known as the “Egg Hut”. It is believed that this
structure was a kind of rest stop for Incan travellers, called a Tambo, where they used
to spend their night and rest their animals. Enjoy a mid-hike break and marvel at this
beautiful Incan architecture.
Sayacmarca Ruins
Sayacmarca ruins are located at a fork in an old Incan road amidst a dense subtropical
forest filled with vivid butterflies and hummingbirds. Relish the most impressive views
along the Inca Trail here.
Phuyupatamarca
Phuyupatamarca, also called “La Ciudad entre la Niebla”, means “The City above the Clouds” and
is a primary archaeological site situated at an astounding 3,200 meters above sea level.
Phuyupatamarca ruins, constructed into a steep cliffside, contain five stone baths that used to
be filled with fresh water during the rainy season. These baths are believed to be used for
religious ceremonies.
