Tips a Powerboat Course
Make You a Confident
Skipper
The RYA Powerboat course is a recognised two-day practical
training programme that covers boat-handling, safety,
seamanship, and basic navigation.
It is designed for those with no prior experience (minimum age
often 12) and takes you from beginner to confident operator of
a small powerboat (often up to 10m).
Confidence on the water doesn’t just happen, but it’s
earned. Here are five ways that completing a powerboat
course delivers that boost:
• You’ll spend most of the two days on the water, not just
reading theory. Practising boat handling, man-over-board
drills and high-speed manoeuvres in a controlled
environment means you learn by doing rather than just
listening.
• The course teaches you about the boat’s behaviour (trim,
planing, reverse, tide, wash effects), safety equipment,
engine checks and how weather and tide affect navigation.
This “knowing what you’re doing” sharply lifts confidence.
• Because you will practice docking,
anchoring, buoy mooring, driving in
confined spaces and handling
emergencies, when you’re out on your
own you’re less likely to panic and more
likely to act calmly and decisively.
• The syllabus emphasises awareness of
your own limitations and those of the
craft—so instead of jumping in and
hoping for the best, you’re equipped to
make sound decisions. For example,
one provider says: you’ll finish the
course “aware of your own limitations
and those of your craft”.
