The principle of electrical transformers is based on the concept of electromagnetic induction. Transformers are static devices that transfer electrical energy from one circuit to another through electromagnetic coupling, without any direct electrical connection between them.

Types of transformers

Types of Transformers 1 Step-down A Step-Down Transformer is a device which converts high primary voltage to a low secondary voltage. In a Step-Down Transformer, the primary winding of a coil has more turns than the secondary winding. In main adapters and chargers for cell phones, stereos and CD players To step down the voltage level in transmission line In welding machines by reducing voltage and increasing current. 2 Step-up In a Step-Up Transformer, there are more turns on the secondary coil compared to the primary coils. The current which flows across the Primary coil is much higher compared to secondary coil. Inverters and Stabilizers where in the Transformers help in stabilizing the low voltage to the higher voltage. Transmit the electricity at lower prices for a longer distance. 3 Isolation Type Isolation transformers provide separation from the power line ground connection to eliminate ground loops and inadvertent test equipment grounding. They also suppress high frequency noise riding on the power source. Use: Reduces Surges, Enhances Safety, Increases Power Quality, Reduces Noise 4 Single Phase A type of transformer which consists of only one pair of the transformer coils or windings, i.e., one primary winding and one secondary winding, and is used for transforming. Transformers operate on the principle of mutual induction, which is the process of inducing a voltage in a coil by changing the current in another coil. 5 Instrument Type The basic purpose of the Instrument transformer is to step down the alternating (ac) power system voltage and current and measure the respective signal. In electrical engineering, a Current Transformers (CT) together with Potential Transformers (PT) is called an Instrument transformer. 6 Iron Core Type Iron core is to channel the magnetic flux generated by the current flowing around the primary coil, so that as much of it as possible also links the secondary coil. 7 Three Phase The primary winding of the three- phase transformer is energized from a three phase supply. Then, the flux is produced in the core by the primary currents in the three windings. The core has three limbs, where any two limbs act as return path for the flux in the third limb. 8 Ferrite Core A type of magnetic core made of ferrite on which the windings of electric transformers and other wound components such as inductors are formed. Ferrite cores are used to suppress electromagnetic emissions by blocking low-frequency noise and absorbing high-frequency noise. This avoids electromagnetic interference. 9 Earthing Type Used for the purpose of providing a neutral point for grounding purpose in a system where the neutral point of a three-phase system are not available or where the transformers or generators are delta connected. 10 Power Type Power transformer is very widely used for stepping up and stepping down the voltage at the electrical power generating station and distribution station (or substation) respectively. 11 Toroidal Core Toroidal transformers provide increased design flexibility, efficiency, and compactness when compared to traditional shell and core type transformers. They are an ideal solution for low-KVA (up to 15 KVA) rated devices. 12 Current Type A current transformer is designed to maintain an accurate ratio between the currents in its primary and secondary circuits over a defined range. The alternating current in the primary produces an alternating magnetic field in the core, which then induces an alternating current in the secondary. 13 Thanks RSR Rungta College of Engineering & Technology, the best engineering college in chhattisgarh offers 4-year long-term course, affiliated with CSVTU emerging as a seat of learning with professional courses being great job opportunity. 14
