Overview 
A middle ear infection (also known as acute otitis media) is 
an infection of the air-filled region beneath the eardrum that 
contains the microscopic vibrating bones of the ear. Ear 
infections are more common in children than in adults.
Common signs and symptoms in adults
• Ear pain
• Drainage of fluid from the ear
• Trouble hearing
Common signs and symptoms in children
• Ear ache, particularly when sleeping down
• Tugging or yanking on an ear
• Having difficulty sleeping
• More tears than normal
• Hearing or responding to noises is difficult.
• Fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) or higher
• Fluid drainage from the ear
