Most Interviews Test the Wrong Things
Question banks floating around online are written for candidates cramming the night before — not for hiring managers trying to
predict who'll actually perform on the job. Python 2 trivia, for instance, has been irrelevant since the language reached end of life
in 2020.
The strongest predictor isn't syntax recall at all — it's whether a candidate can break a messy problem
into clear steps and explain their reasoning as they go.

Core Fundamentals to Test
These aren't advanced topics in 2026 — they're the baseline
1 2
Generators and iterators — and when to reach for them Decorators — writing one, not just recognizing the
over lists syntax
3 4
The GIL — what it actually does, and how it shapes Memory model — how objects, references, and
concurrency choices assignment really work
3
What NOT to Ask
✕ Python 2 vs Python 3 trivia
Python 2 reached end of life in January 2020 — six years of irrelevance
✕ Memorized syntax recall
Recognizing a dunder method on a slide tells you little about real usage
✕ Puzzle questions with no real-world link
Clever riddles predict puzzle-solving, not production code quality
✕ A fifth video round instead of a written test
A scoped async or system-design task is often more predictive
4
Match Questions to Your Actual Stack
Framework fluency doesn't transfer the way candidates claim it does
Django FastAPI Flask
ORM depth, migrations, and query Async patterns, dependency injection, Blueprint structure, extension choices,
optimization under real load and request/response modeling and request lifecycle handling
5
Async & Concurrency
Test the execution model — not just whether they know the keywords
1
Can they explain why async code helps I/O-bound work but not CPU-bound work?
2
Would they do heavy processing synchronously before returning a response?
3
Do they understand the difference between concurrency and parallelism in Python?
4
How would they actually test async code, not just write it?
6
System Design & Architecture
The stage where most senior offers are actually won or lost
1 Watch whether they ask clarifying questions before diving into a solution
2 For a debugging scenario, do they start with metrics, traces, and logs — or guesswork?
3 Can they reason about trade-offs out loud, not just land on a final answer?
4 Do they consider how their design affects the rest of the system?
7
Beyond the Code
✓
Problem decomposition — can they break a vague ask into concrete steps?
✓
Communication under pressure — can they think out loud without freezing up?
✓
Version control habits — do they actually use Git deliberately, or just push to main?
✓
Debugging instinct — do they reach for logging and profiling tools, or guess and check?

A Sample Interview Structure
Senior loops average 4–6 rounds — most offers are won or lost at the design stage
Fundamentals Framework Async / System Culture &
Screen → Deep-Dive → Live Coding → Design → Comms Fit
A 24-hour written async or design task is often more predictive than adding a fifth video round.
