Grace and Courtesy
Grace and courtesy are about polite and respectful manners and 
behaviours. This course makes it possible for mixed-age groups to 
learn and maintain an environment. This is because it teaches the 
children about respecting everyone despite being younger than you. 
Grace and courtesy are also where the children learn about patience, 
greetings, respectful disagreement, etc.
Care of Self
The ability to care for the basic necessity is essential if your child is 
going to be independent one day. The basic necessity for self care at 
this age is nothing more than using the bathroom, using tissues, 
getting dressed, etc. Montessori helps the children not only learn 
these skills but also allows them enough time to practice at their own 
pace. 
Care of the Environment
Care for the environment doesn’t necessarily have to be about the 
outside environment but the environment inside the classroom. A 
Montessori school or classroom is no less than a community.
With this concept, children feel valued because they feel like they are 
responsible for real work, like cleaning messes, using brooms, mops, 
etc. They learn to use the tools that are designed for children.
Control of Movement
Control of movement is associated with developing balance, 
coordination and fine motor skills. Montessori believes that controlling 
your body has various benefits, like the additional ability to control 
your mind and impulses.
Activities on this concept are simple and fun-filled. Some of the 
activities include:
Balance
Children follow a marked line and walk with a pattern where they put 
one foot in front of the other. Sometimes the children hold a bell and 
walk in a way that it must not make the bell ring.
Coordination
This requires the children to carry materials from a small tray to their 
workstation, one by one. They learn how to carefully walk in a busy 
space.
Fine motor skills
This aspect of control of movement includes working with small beads 
and needles, and threads.
