Fire Pump
Fire pumps are important parts of a building's fire safety system, especially in tall buildings. When
water pressure from water mains and fire fighting equipment can't reach floors 400 to 500 feet or
higher, fire pumps are needed to get water to sprinkler systems.
Even in buildings with lower floors, a fire pump is a key part of putting out a fire. Even when it's done
well, fire fighting is a dangerous job. Without a well-designed system and pump that was put in by a
professional, it's even more dangerous, and more lives and business assets are at risk.
How Does a Fire Pump Work?
A fire fighting pump is an important part of a fire sprinkler
system. It gives the fire sprinkler system access to high-
pressure water, which speeds up the flow of water.
How Does a Fire Pump Work?
Before you can understand how a fire pump works, you need
to know what it is. A fire pump is more than just its namesake,
the pump. The pump is an important part of the system, but
the full system is made up of the motor, or driver, and the
controller. As part of a fire sprinkler system, a fire pump gets
water from either an underground water source or a water
tank, lake, or reservoir. It is powered by either electricity or
diesel fuel. Water is sent through the sprinkler system and
hose standpipes by the pump's high pressure.

Fire Pump Types
Horizontal split case
The horizontal split case is the type of fire pump system that is used most often. These pumps are the
most cost-effective for applications with higher flow rates and are easy to get to for repairs or
maintenance. They are even more popular because they last a long time and come in different sizes.
Vertical split case
Vertical split case fire pumps are very similar to horizontal split case fire pumps, except that their
vertical design takes up less room and protects the pump from damage that could be caused by
flooding.
Fire Pump Types
Vertical in-line pump
The vertical in-line pump is a single-stage centrifugal pump made for vertical installation, as the name
suggests. This pump's suction and delivery are in the same line, so water flows smoothly through the
system. It's great for small spaces. For repairs or maintenance, the design does mean that the pump
has to be taken out.
Vertical turbine
The vertical turbine is a centrifugal pump made for fire pump services where the water source is below
ground. There are different kinds of this fire pump, such as oil-lubricated open-line-shaft pumps and oil-
lubricated enclosed-line-shaft pumps. Both kinds are made to be put in drilled wells, lakes, streams,
open swamps, and other places below the surface.
Installing and Maintaining Fire Pumps
As with the decision on what pump and system to use, the installation and maintenance of any fire
system should be handled by fire safety professionals. There are many considerations as per the
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the International Building Code (IBC), which are
updated from time to time.
Though weekly inspections may be done by trained personnel on-site, monthly, annual, and further
inspections and maintenance should be performed by qualified personnel including factory-trained and
certified personnel, personnel certified by a national recognized fire protection organization, or
personnel who are registered, licensed, or certified by a state or local authority.
Fire Pumps in Your Building
In many buildings, a fire pump is an important piece of fire- and life-safety equipment. Before installing
any unit, there are a lot of things to think about and requirements to meet. The building owner, the
architect, the engineer, the local fire marshal, and the fire protection provider should all talk about the
pump and system to make sure that the final installation is well-planned and up to code.
Nowadays electric fire pump, diesel fire pump, fire water pump, and diesel engine fire pump are
popular.
