Urticaria, commonly known as Hive or weal, usually appears to be a bumpy, red, itchy patch or rash over the skin which further grows into a welt having defined borders. These can develop on any part of the skin varying in size from few millimetres to the size of a hand.

a hand. Urticaria can be
categorised as follows:
Acute Urticaria:
These rashes do not last for more than six
weeks and gets cleared within the
duration. It predominantly is caused due
to allergens from food, medication or
infections and usually affects younger
people. Nuts, chocolates, fish, berries,
tomatoes and milk are few foods which
can trigger acute urticaria.
Chronic Urticaria
Affecting mostly mid elderly population these rashes
tend to stay for longer than six weeks and may recur in
months or years again. These do not have clear pattern
and may keep on fading away and reappearing on
other places. In 90 percent cases the cause behind
occurrence of CU is hard to identify. However, it is
associated with prolonged illness, infections and
autoimmune disorders.
