Hypertension during pregnancy can arise due to various factors, posing risks to both mother and baby. Common causes include pre-existing high blood pressure, obesity, first-time pregnancy, carrying multiples (twins or more), and a family history of pregnancy-related hypertension. Other contributing factors include poor diet, lack of physical activity, kidney disorders, autoimmune conditions, and gestational hypertension that develops after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Hormonal changes and abnormal development of placental blood vessels may also play a role. Timely prenatal care and monitoring are essential to manage high blood pressure in pregnancy and prevent complications like preeclampsia or premature delivery.
