Phase transfer catalysis (PTC) is an instrumental technique in synthesizing amines via SN2 alkylation. PTC often allows weaker, more environmentally friendly inorganic bases than organic and organometallic bases. More importantly, PTC can enable using a broader range of solvents other than dipolar aprotic. The application of PTC can allow for very concentrated or neat reactions if the reagents are liquids. The substrate scope of this technique is extensive, extending to aliphatic nucleophiles and heterocycles.PTC is scalable and easily implemented on an industrial scale.
