Ecosystem Services
 
The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment defined 
Ecosystem Services as “the benefits people originate from 
ecosystems”. Besides provisioning services or goods like 
food, wood as well as other recycleables, plants, 
creatures, fungi and micro­microorganisms provide 
essential controlling services for instance pollination of 
crops, protection against soil erosion and water 
purification, together with several cultural services, like 
entertainment and a sense of place.


Whatever the ecological, cultural and economic requirement 
for these facilities, environments as well as the bio­diversity 
that underpins them continue being degraded and lost 
within an unparalleled scale. One primary reason with this 
particular is the value (importance) of environments to 
human welfare remains undervalued rather than fully 
recognized in every single day planning and decision­
making, basically, the benefits of their expertise aren't, or 
only partly, drawn in conventional market overall costs. 


Planned Activities
 
To achieve these objectives, the CEM Ecosystem Service 
Thematic Group aims to make a global network of 
understanding bases and situation studies so that you can 
develop best practice guidelines for your sustainable control 
of environments, while using further reason for 
demonstrating real existence using the ‘ecosystem services 
concept’ which purchasing nature conservation and 
restoration ‘pays’!


IUCN Linkages
 
Due to the quantity of disciplines connected using the 
Ecosystem Services theme, the CEM­ES Thematic Group 
(TG) will probably be cooperating carefully as well as other 
CEM thematic groups, on mix­cutting issues, like the 
Ecosystem Red List TG Ecosystem Restoration TG Ecosystem 
as well as the Private Sector TG and Ecosystem Approach 
TG.
 
Furthermore, collaboration will probably be explored as 
well as other IUCN commissions, partnerships and regional 
offices like the World Commission on Protected Areas 
(WCPA) and Global Partnership on Forest and Landscape 
Restoration (GPFLR).


Reason for the CEM Thematic Group on Ecosystem Services
 
The overall reason for this Thematic Group is always to 
boost the understanding base on ecosystem services in 
addition to their values, and stimulate the mixture from the 
understanding in planning and selection for sustainable 
ecosystem management.


Specific Objectives
 
Stimulate research round the capacity and resilience of 
environments to provide services or products in the 
sustainable manner, and develop tools and guidelines for 
practical applications and integrated ecosystem services 
assessments.
 
Highlight the importance (value) of ecosystem services for 
governments, communities and corporations understand the 
users/beneficiaries (stakeholders) of ecosystem services and 
stimulate partnerships as well as other incentive 
mechanisms in order to save and restore environments in 
addition to their services.


Global Partnerships
 
The CEM Ecosystem Services theme in concert with 
carefully while using primary worldwide organizations, 
among others:
 
The Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP): a platform 
that aims to improve communication, coordination and 
cooperation, also to create a strong network of 
individuals and organizations. The ESP is chaired by 
Rudolf de Groot, former Lead and current Special 
Consultant in the Ecosystem Services Thematic Group.


The Sub­Global Assessment (SGA) Network, coordinated 
by UNEP­WCMC, seeks to make a common platform for 
practitioners associated with ecosystem assessment at 
regional, sub­regional, national and sub­national levels. 
The intention is always to promote and facilitate 
improved capacity in undertaking and ultizing 
assessments.
