IMPACT OF DEMONETIZATION
ON INDIAN GDP
INTRODUCTION
When the government of any country cease a
currency unit or put a stop to its status as a legal
tender is known as demonetization.
On 8 November 2016, PM Narendra Modi, carried
out a demonetization exercise in India that is
considered to be the biggest ever. Under the exercise,
the notes with the highest denomination of Rs 500
and Rs 1,000, lost their worth in one night and were
withdrawn from public use.
ADVANTAGES
Put an end to the use of fake currency
Help in tackling corruption
Reduced of illegal activities
Encourage digitization
Disclosed black money
DISADVANTAGES
Inconvenience to public.
Disruption of business activities.
Labour/wage payment issues
Huge economic cost to nation.
Problematic situation for small scale business.
IMPACT ON GDP
GDP is the acronym for Gross Domestic Product. The
GDP growth rate of India in 20152016 fell from
8.01% to 7.11% demonetization took place.
It has also adversely impacted the functionality of
banks as there was more pressure on them by the
current account holders demanding large sums of
cash and the main work of the banks, i.e., to issue
and manage loans was put on a hold.
The growth of the farming sector stood at 5.2% for
the fourth quarter FY17 while for manufacturing
sector it stopped at 5.3%.
The reduction in the consumption demand has a
great impact on the GDP formation of a country. But
the rise in festival demand would help to offset the
fall in overall impact. Once the cash flow becomes
normal with time the effect on GDP will be less
affected and the growth of the economy will be in
the good pace.
Impact on the growth of India
As the money flow is less the demand will be slow and this
will hamper the growth rate
Different economist have a different view, for some, it is
good for fictional longterm gain as the government will
have more revenue
India being a cashbased and demonetization will
temporarily decrease the demand as that will result to slow
down in the consumer market
It is difficult for people to understand who to deal with it
as there was not a perfect plan for its implementation,
leading to slow down of the consumer market as people
have become cashless in almost every sense.
CONCLUSION
It can be said that the effect of demonetization will be
seen positively in the passage of time and all the
disadvantages will be outweighed. The bold step taken
by the government is to be seen with the longterm
benefit and everyone should at least try to hold the
hands with the government in order to make the cash
flow easier in every possible manner.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!
