Argillite
Argillite is a slate rock found on Haida-Gwaii. 
Native artists carve sculptures that reflect 
the ancient traditions and myths of the Haida 
culture.
Ivory 
Alaskan walrus ivory figures are carved by the 
Yupik and the Inupiaq Eskimos. The Yupik 
Eskimos live principally in the villages of 
Gambell and Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island. 
The Inupiaq Eskimos live on mainland Alaska 
but originate from the King Islands.

Northwest Coast Wood carvings and basketry are 
an important part of Northwest Coast 
ceremonies. There are many nations within this 
region. Some of the major nations are the Coast 
Salish, Haida, Kwakwaka'wakw, Nisga'a, Nuu-
chah-nulth, Nuxalt, Tlingit, and Tsimshian.
Tupilaks 
Tupilaks are a form of Greenlandic Inuit art that 
has existed for many centuries.         In recent 
times, tupilaks have been carved from a variety 
of materials such as stone, wood,         ivory, 
and caribou antler.
Haida Argillite Carvings
Haida artists have carved argillite 
sculptures. Argillite is a slate rock found 
on Slatechuck Mountain near the village 
of Skidegate on the Queen Charlotte 
Islands. The sculptures carved today 
reflect the ancient traditions and myths 
of Haida culture. Intricate figures 
unique in their symbolic representation 
are the focus of our selection of argillite 
carvings.
