What Are The Different Types
Of Bridges?
Overview
Clearly, bridges are tremendously important for a nation. Bridges connect people, goods, and
transports. In fact, they are crucial for human life and the economy. Therefore, it’s imperative
to maintain them well. America is struggling with an infrastructure crisis for the last few
years. However, things are getting better after the public-private partnership which involves
an agreement between private transportation infrastructure companies and the US
government. According to this agreement, a private transportation infrastructure agency
invests in bridge infrastructure funds to help the government in repairing structurally
deficient and functionally obsolete bridges.
Let’s Dive Into Some Different Types Of Bridges:
Beam Bridge
Arch Bridge
Suspension Bridge
Beam Bridge
It is a very simple type of bridge that requires less
investment. In order to build this bridge, you need a
crossbeam covering the span, supported by an
abutment at each end. Sadly, this type of bridge is
less stable. However, adding supports like
stanchions or piers can help you create a stable
bridge. The 24-mile Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in
Louisiana and the 3.2-mile Yolo Causeway near
Sacramento are some examples of Beam Bridge.
Arch Bridge
Well, previously Romans built several stone arch
bridges! In fact, some of them are still present. The
Pont-Saint-Martin bridge in Italy’s Aosta Valley is an
example of an Arch Bridge. Clearly, arch bridges are
based on the principle called compression.
Suspension Bridge
It is the most recognizable type of bridge in the United
States. As the name suggests, a suspension bridge
involves pillars that are connected with suspension
cables. The most iconic bridge named Golden Gate
Bridge in San Francisco is the biggest example of a
suspension bridge. More than 10 million people visit
this bridge every year.
