Program (OPT)

What is OPT?
It is a training program that temporarily allows 
International Students with an F1 visa in the USA to 
work for 12 months. 
After 12 you can extend the visa for 24 months if 
your course is in STEM (Science, Technology, 
Engineering, Mathematics).

You have to apply for OPT once for each degree 
level.
Types of OPT
• Pre-completion OPT: Before 
Graduation
• Post-completion OPT: After 
Graduation
• 24-month STEM extension: After 
initial OPT for STEM (Science,

Eligibility
F1 Students (Students on an educational visas in the USA).
Students enrolled for full-time education for at least 
one year.
After completing the course study (post-completion
OPT).
Those who have not used the 12 months or more full-
time Curricular Practical Training (CPT).

Types of Employment Allowed
Paid Employment.
Unpaid Employment (volunteers, unpaid 
internship).
Note: OPT employment must be in a job that 
is related to your academics.

Did you know? When to Apply?
Not 90 days before the completion of the 
program.
Not 60 days after the end of the program.
When to apply for STEM OPT?
No earlier than 90 days and no later 
than 45 days before the EAD

Program End date for OPT?
Two Options:
• Thesis.
• End of Last Semester of academic 
studies.

• OPT Recommendation Form.
• Form I-765.
• Form G-1145.
• 2 Passport Size Photographs.
• Copies of Passport Bio Page.
• Copies of F1 visa stamp and I-94 
card/record.
• Copies of all the previous I-20 forms till now.

recommendation.

• FGUC Academic Advisor Letter of

STEM applicants only).
