Hair fall
Hair loss is a very common condition of shedding of hair strands leading to thinning
of hair, baldness, etc. and can affect both men and women. Hair loss, medically
known as alopecia, can affect people at any given time in their life for reasons that
might be genetic, or due to bad diet, unhealthy lifestyle, recovery from a recent
disease, and so on.
Hair loss can be distinguished based on breakage of hair shaft and decreased hair
growth. Usually, hair loss is more prevalent in older adults, but it can be found in
children as well. However, one should understand that losing just 50-100 hair
strands a day isn’t a cause of concern, given there are more than 100,000 strands on
your scalp.
Alopecia can be both permanent and temporary. If you notice losing more hair than
usual that’s when you should consult a doctor. We, at Vardaan Clinic have plenty of
solutions for your hair fall problems ranging from over the counter medicines to
medical treatments.
Causes of Hair loss
There can be a number of reasons for which you might be experiencing hair fall.
Before taking a treatment, you first need to get diagnosed with the problem, if there
is any. Dr. Jyoti Sharma is an expert in recognizing the root cause and advising the
best solutions.
Some of the common causes can be-
1. Hormonal changes in women due to-
Pregnancy
Childbirth
Menopause
Birth control pills
2. Medical conditions such as-
Thyroid
Alopecia Aerate (an autoimmune condition in which body attacks its
own hair follicles.)
Scalp infections such as ringworm
Iron deficiency anaemia
3. Due to medications for curing other diseases such as-
Cancer
Arthritis
High Blood Pressure
Depression, etc
4. Unhealthy diet lacking iron, protein, vitamins and others leading to thinning
of hair.
5. Ageing
6. Puberty
Getting a treatment
Once your doctor identifies the underlying cause of your hair fall/ hair loss, there are
various treatments that you can undergo to get rid of this problem.
1. Medications
Easiest way to treat a hair fall problem is taking prescribed medications. It is always
better to try and fix the problem using over the counter methods than surgeries, etc.
Your doctor can either recommend you apply certain kind of shampoo and serum on
your scalp, or oral medicines or a combination of both based upon your diagnosis.
However, there are always certain side effects associated with the kind of
medications you decide to intake such as-
I. High blood pressure
II. Cataract
III. Reduced sex drive
IV. Eye infection, etc
Therefore, never take a medication without a prescription and without discussing it’s
pros and cons with your doctor.
2. Medical procedures
If medications aren’t enough to treat your hair fall condition, then doctors can go
further to suggest relevant medical procedures that can help you with the problem.
These include-
I. Hair Transplant Surgery
This involves moving of small portions of your skin having a few hair to the bald area
of your scalp. It is recommended for people with inherited baldness.
II. PRP for hair fall
Platelet-rich-plasma is a process in which a substance is taken from your blood
and then injected into your scalp. It is a process which increases the concentration of
certain proteins that contribute towards healing in your body.
III. Scalp reduction
In this procedure, a part of your scalp without hair is removed and replaced with
another piece of your scalp containing hair. Tissue expansion is another form of this
procedure which requires two surgeries, where in first surgery; a tissue expander is
placed under a part of your scalp which has hair next to a bald spot which over a few
weeks stretches out over your scalp. In the second surgery the expander is removed
by the surgeon and the stretched part of your scalp is moved over your bald spot.
Any of the surgical procedures tend to be expensive and always include a form of risk
and various side effects. So, it is always advisable to take various opinions before
choosing to undergo a medical treatment.
