The CEO of Skretting, Therese Log Bergjord, presented an over-
view of the world’s largest seafood companies by turnover at the 
recent Aqkva conference.

Highest by Turnover Fourth and Fifth
Japanese company Maruha Nichiro Mowi, the company formerly known as 
headed the list, with turnover of US$7.2 Marine Harvest, takes fourth position 
billion. The company boasts being the in the list of global seafood companies 
first to introduce Atlantic salmon farming by turnover. It is followed by Mitsubishi 
to Chile and has been in business for a full which, although better known for its pro-
century, focusing both on fishing and on duction of cars and aircraft, has a sub-
importing. stantial seafood import sector and wholly 
owns the multinational salmon farming 
business Cermaq.
Close Competition
Next in line is another Japanese compa-
ny, Nippon Suisan Kaisha, with turnover 
of $5.7 billion and similar business inter-
ests to Maruha Nichiro. This is followed by 
Thai Union Group, which deals in black 
tiger shrimp and tuna among other prod-
ucts, with a turnover of $3.8 billion.
