Urethane Windshield Adhesive
Urethane is the common name for Polyurethane. It's an adhesive designed 
specifically for sealing and bonding windshields, side windows, quarter glass, 
and rear window back glass in the automotive industry. Urethane is a dark 
material that cures completely and is quite flexible. Urethane is now employed 
in high-performance car glass bonding applications in both foreign and domestic 
vehicles as technology advances. 
Benefits of Using Urethane 
Urethane has the capacity to endure significant levels of deformation while 
maintaining adhesive strength and function. 
1. They are abrasion-resistant and robust. 
2. The Beta seal urethane adhesives are designed to survive prolonged 
exposure to the elements.
3. Polyurethane has a holding strength of 10,000 PSI once it has been cured. 
This is highly robust and will keep any windshield firmly attached to the 
vehicle. 
4. Because of its flexibility, polyurethane works well as a windshield adhesive. 
Butyl Windshield Adhesive
Butyl is actually a windshield sealant, not an adhesive. Butyl is a black, sticky 
material that seals holes well but is no longer used as a windshield glue. It was 
popular until the 1970s and costs about half as much as urethane. As a result, 
despite the fact that it is not as safe, many installers continue to use it.
Butyl is still a good sealer and can be used to close minor holes despite this. It is 
resistant to stress and temperature fluctuations.
Butyl does not cure or harden after installation, unlike urethane, it does not 
form a strong bond with the car. This leads to the windshield having an 
extremely weak attachment with the car, causing the glass to eject from the 
vehicle during frontal accidents. 
Urethane or Butyl- Which to Use?
Which one of these to use totally depends on your requirements. So, if you have 
a chipped or cracked windshield that has to be replaced, it is best to seek the 
help of professionals. Also, do enquire if the windshield experts replace it 
according to manufacturer specifications and is AGRSS approved. You should 
also enquire about whether they utilise urethane as an adhesive and how long 
they recommend the automobile be left to cure before driving.
