INDIA WAS ONCE AN 
ISLAND
More than a hundred million years ago, the bulk of 
what is now India was an island. 
Actually, the land was part of a supercontinent 
called Gondwanaland, which broke apart and shifted 
to the north. 
About 50 million years old, Asia collided with the 
continental plate.

INDIA NAMED AFTER A 
RIVER
The nation called after the Indus River that passes 
through India and Pakistan, (which was a part of 
India pre-Independence in 1947). 
Although the name 'India' is comparatively recent, 
it had been named Hindustan by Muslim invaders 
who invaded India before the British Raj, also a 
derivative of the Indus River name. The term 
'Hindus' derives from Indus as well.

INDIAN CIVILIZATION PRE-DATES 
THE EGYPTIANS
The Indus Valley Civilization, far older than its oldest 
rival, the Egyptian Civilization, is arguably the oldest in 
the world. 
New research indicates that 8,000 years old is the 
civilisation that existed in India and Pakistan - 2,500 
years earlier than scholars historically believed it was. 
In the other side, the Egyptian civilization dates back 
3,000 years. The Indus Valley Civilization also had well-
planned towns for its time, but most of them were 
ruined by the flood.

POPULATION
Although only a fraction of Indians adopt Islam, India is 
considered to be the second or third largest Muslim 
community in the world, ranking higher than many 
Muslim majority nations, around 15 percent.

If it were not for the Indian astronomer-mathematician 
Aryabhatta, there would have been no number zero. 
Indians are also credited for their trigonometry, algebra 
and calculus contributions.

made.

CHESS IS AN INDIAN INVENTION
About the 6th century BC, the oldest form of chess is 
said to have emerged in India. 
It is then said that the game extended westward to 
Persia and later to Europe. 
In reality, Snakes and Ladders, the famous children's 
board game, was also an Indian creation.

LARGEST FILM INDUSTRY
On average, every year the Indian film industry 
produces more than 1,000 films, far more than 
Hollywood does in the same time. 
In reality, most of the films are not even made in 
Bollywood, but are widely spoken in South India in the 
regional Telugu and Tamil languages.

For generations, inhabitants of Shani Shingnapur 
village in Maharashtra have lived in doorless homes. 
They assume the wrath of the Shani god will be 
suffered by anyone who steals from their home. There

 DIAMONDS WERE FIRST MINED 
IN INDIA
Before diamonds were found in Brazil in the 18th 
century, they were mined in alluvial deposits in a few
