PPT on Organic Farming.
Organic Farming
ORGANIC FARMING
What is Organic Farming?
• Organic farming can be defined as a system of management
and agricultural production that combines a high level of
biodiversity with environmental practices that preserve natural
resources and has rigorous standards for animal welfare.

Demand for natural products
• Furthermore, organic farming responds to consumer growing
demand for natural products and simultaneously allows to
preserve the environment in the context of sustainable rural
development.

Principles of organic farming
• No use of “synthetic” chemicals yet fertilizers or pesticides at
their “natural origin” are allowed
• No use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
• Recycle all organic waste
• Crop rotation to improve soil regeneration

Principles of organic farming cont.
• Pest control by biological agents
• Extensive breeding with organic food and give priority to
alternative medicines and preventions
• Ensure animal welfare
• Respect for the environment and preservation of natural
resources

Benefits
• In general, organic farming is more widespread than
conventional farming: for example, farm animals in organic
farming generally benefit from larger areas, with compulsory
access to the outdoors for certain animals.

Disadvantage
• The yields of organic farming are generally lower than those of
conventional farming. This means higher operating costs.
• Therefore, in general, the recommended retail price (RRP) for
consumers buying from organic farming is higher than the
selling prices of traditional agriculture.

Organic Farming And Health
• The consumption of organic products is often correlated with
more healthy lifestyles of people who follow a better diet,
practice sports, pay more attention to health or have higher
living standards.

Organic Farming And The Environment
• Organic farming also has several benefits for the environment.
The first is obviously that it reduces the number of pesticides
used. Thus, organic farming reduces the potentially harmful
effects of pesticides on biodiversity and ecosystems.

Sustainability over the long term
• Organic agriculture considers the medium- and long-term effect
of agricultural interventions on the agro-ecosystem.
• It aims to produce food while establishing an ecological balance
to prevent soil fertility or pest problems. Organic agriculture
takes a proactive approach as opposed to treating problems
after they emerge.

Air and climate change
• Organic farming reduces non-renewable energy use by
decreasing agrochemical needs (these require high quantities
of fossil fuel to be produced).
• Organic farming contributes to mitigating the greenhouse
effect and global warming through its ability to sequester
carbon in the soil.
