Poverty and its effects.
POVERTY AND
ITS EFFECTS
Introduction
• Poverty stretches across the globe
affecting almost half of the world’s
population. Its effects reach deeper.
Uniquely connected to different causes,
the effects of poverty are revolving—one
result leads to another source leads to
another consequence.

Effects of poverty on
health
• Without effective sanitation in their home,
children are especially vulnerable to life-
threatening diarrhea and intestinal
infections.
• And in houses where there’s insufficient
ventilation, people are especially
vulnerable to respiratory diseases.

Effects of poverty on
education and
schooling
• Home gives children opportunity for the
future by providing a stable foundation
where they can study and do as well as
they can at school.
• Children are also able to develop into
responsible adults as they experience
security and see their own parents taking
care of the home.

Effects of poverty on
children and families
• When families have a home where they
feel safe and secure they will draw
together as a family unit to love and
support one another.
• There is also an added sense of pride
and dignity that comes with a decent
home which translates to a hopefulness
for the future well being and success of
the family.

Crime
• There’s an old adage that says, “If a man
don’t work, he don’t eat.” That’s not the
case for a large number people living in
poverty. Lack of economic opportunity
leads to impoverishment which then leads
to crime.

Homelessness
• Poor people are usually homeless. They
sleep on the roadsides at night. This
makes the entire scenario very unsafe for
women and children.

Child labor
• Poverty forces poor people to send their
children to work instead of sending them
to schools. This is because the families
fail to bear the burden of their child/
children. Among the poor families,
children start earning at an average age
of 5 years only.

Effect on Economy
• Poverty is directly proportional to the
success of the economy. The number of
people living in the poverty is reflective of
how powerful is the economy.

Effects on society as a
whole
• In the end, poverty is a major cause of
social tensions and threatens to divide a
nation because of the issue of
inequalities, in particular income
inequality. This happens when wealth in a
country is poorly distributed among its
citizens. In other words, when a tiny
minority has all the money.
