Cheetahs are the fastest land animal 
in the world, capable of accelerating 
from zero to 60 miles per hour in just 
three seconds! Remarkably, they can 
reach speeds of up to 70 miles per 
hour for short distances.

Cheetahs use their speed to run down 
their prey, which consists primarily of 
gazelles, wildebeest, and other hoofed 
animals. Because of their small size 
and spotted coats, they don’t roar as 
other big cats do.

Cheetahs were once widespread in Asia 
and Africa; they now live only in the 
savannahs and grasslands of sub-Saharan 
Africa. In spite of their recent decline in 
numbers, cheetahs are not on the list of 
endangered species! Many people have 
seen them only on television and 
magazines or the internet.

The primary threat; facing this species is 
the loss of habitat for agriculture, human 
settlement, and livestock grazing. 
Cheetahs can only thrive in areas where 
there is enough prey available for them to 
hunt. There are two subspecies of the 
cheetah: the African cheetah and the 
Asiatic cheetah.

The loss of habitat has also impacted this 
subspecies and resulted in the 
disappearance of Indian species and 
extensive fragmentation of their 
populations across Iran, Afghanistan, 
Pakistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

How many cheetahs are left in the world? 
The cheetah is vulnerable to extinction with 
only about 7,000 individuals remaining in 
Africa. The cheetah population has 
declined from an estimated 100,000 to 
10,000 individuals in the past 50 years.

This occurs due to human and livestock 
conflicts or poisoning from ranchers that 
see it as a threat to the livestock. The other 
main factor is habitat loss and 
fragmentation which is making it difficult for 
the cheetahs to move within their range, 
leading to weaker gene diversity amongst 
the populations.

Cheetahs usually feed on antelopes such 
as impala, kudu, warthog, and gazelles, but 
they also hunt small mammals, birds, and 
reptiles. They are often seen hunting in 
groups known as "coalitions."

A coalition is a group of 2 or 3 males who 
will work together to track down and take 
down prey by forming a wide semi-circle 
around their intended target. Sadly, due to 
poaching for their fur, cheetahs are now 
threatened with extinction. There are 
several reports and articles about these 
issues in newspapers, books, and 
magazines.

Cheetahs face many challenges, 
including climate change, human 
hunting, and habitat destruction. 
These threats have caused cheetah 
populations to decline at an alarming 
rate over the past century. The 
species' genes may also be holding 
the cheetah back from continued 
survival.

Their reproductive success is low, 
meaning that there are fewer 
offspring and fewer cats in each 
generation. With fewer cats in each 
generation, the population cannot 
grow or adapt to changes in its 
environment.
