Introduction: Three Keys to Understanding Reality
Hindu philosophy does not view reality as either true or false, but rather as a
multifaceted experience of existence. Three fundamental notions lie at the
core of this question: Asat, Maya, and Satyam. Collectively, they clarify
illusion and ignorance, appearance and perception, and the final truth of
things. These concepts are the philosophical backbone to the comprehension
of the self, the world, and liberation (moksa).
The Hindu Vision of Reality
In Hindu thought, reality is considered to be multidimensional, as opposed to
the idea propounded by materialist philosophies. What is imagined is not
necessarily actual, and what is actual is not necessarily imagined. The
universe is perceived based on experience, consciousness, and insight, and
not on sensory evidence. This spectrum between unreality, illusion, and the
absolute truth is described by Asat, Maya, and Satyam.
Asat: The Principle of Non-Being:
Meaning of Asat
Asat is simply a translation of that which is not. It means non-existence,
falseness, or something that cannot exist permanently. Asat in Hindu
philosophy is not absence, but unreality, which is temporarily present but
immanent.
Asat in Human Experience
Asat appears as ignorance (avidya), false identity with the body, egocentric
desires and illusion based beliefs. Anything that emerges, develops, and dies
without existence is considered as Asat.
Asat and Impermanence
The Upanisads point out that anything temporal cannot be truly real. Such
things as wealth, authority, and physical forms are Asat in the sense that they
do not last beyond time.
Maya: The Power of Illusion:
Maya as Cosmic Appearance
Maya is the enigmatic force that causes the unreal to become real and the
real to be inconspicuous. It is not pure falsehood, but an obscuring power
and a projecting power which makes perception.
Maya and the World
This world of experience (jagat) is a result of Maya. It is real but
metaphysically unreal, just as one would consider a dream to be real until
one wakes up.
Maya and the Individual Mind
Maya is the one that works by the mind and senses to chain people towards
desire, fear and attachment. It leads to the confusion of the self (Atman) with
the body and ego.
Satyam: The Ultimate Truth:
Meaning of Satyam
Satyam is an equivalent of what really exists. It is unchanging, immutable, and
self-existent. In the Upanisadic understanding, Brahman, which is the absolute
reality, is identical with Satyam.
Satyam as Consciousness
Satyam is not something but a simple being and consciousness (sat-cit). It is
the foundation of everything, outside of time, form, and causation.
The Relationship Between Asat, Maya, and Satyam:
From Illusion to Realization
The illusion is called Asat, the process that illudes is called Maya, and the truth
behind the illusory process is called Satyam. The path between Asat and
Satyam is spiritual life, which is achieved with the help of discernment (viveka).
Knowledge as Liberation
With the transcendence of Maya by means of knowledge (jnana), Asat
becomes undone, and Satyam is intuited not in the form of belief, but in the
form of direct experience itself.
Conclusion:
The combination of Asat, Maya, and Satyam creates a great structure of Hindu
philosophy. They also depict that to be free, one does not have to transform the
world but to perceive it in a new light. When illusion disappears, the truth comes
out--and the seeker wakes up to his own immortal reality.
