We often find ourselves pushing against difficulties and working hard
to control our lives. Yet, what if our choices followed the cycles of the
universe naturally? Being aligned with the universe isn’t about being
passive; it requires us to listen, trust, and be in harmony.
Ancient Indian thought suggests that every being or thing moves
according to its place in the cosmic order known as rta. Nature does
not require command, as the sun rises every morning, rivers flow
naturally and seasons appear one after another. Living according to
this hierarchy with a clear mind and controlled actions, our lives take
on greater purpose and become easier to manage.
When we align ourselves with the universe, we become more aware
of our profound connection to all that surrounds us. It calls on us to
cultivate kindness and simplicity, and to remain mindful of our
behavior. We come to understand that our actions influence the
world we live in.
The Bhagavad Gita also teaches: “The way I see it, it is better to be
unsuccessful in what you are meant to do than to succeed in duties
that are not right for you.” This is more than just advice; it guides
you through what you need to do for fulfillment. Once we quit
noticing our differences and learn to coordinate, we find that our
work feels more valuable and useful.
The key to living in harmony is self-awareness. It involves
recognizing our strengths and identifying areas for improvement,
then taking thoughtful action to develop both. Imposing a role on
someone that doesn’t fit their ability can lead to inner stress.
Understanding our true selves and the purpose of our lives leads to
inner peace.
This understanding influences the way we approach our lives. We
become aware of our eating, choose our words carefully, and
approach our work with intention. We focus on enjoying what we
have, instead of wanting more. While the change may seem small, it
makes a significant difference for individuals and communities.
Tuning into the world involves giving up some of our control. It
encourages us to trust that things will unfold in their own time,
rather than forcing them to happen. This doesn’t mean you need to
stay dormant, but you do need to be alert. We get better at
understanding what our emotions are telling us, what's happening
around us, and what our hearts are asking for.
Spending time in nature can deepen our connection with it and
strengthen our sense of belonging. Viewing a sunrise, walking
through a forest, or looking up at the sky can open us to nature’s
harmony. Nature takes its time, yet no job goes undone.
Meditation can also be a helpful practice. Noticing the present and
focusing our attention helps us discover a quiet mind, similar to the
stillness found everywhere in nature and space.
The process of being in harmony with the universe never truly ends
as we continue to live. Sometimes, you could feel perplexed and
uncertain as you learn. Taking time to stop, reflect, and adjust our
actions helps us approach that natural rhythm. Eventually, we come
to understand that life should be cherished, not always fought
against.
A dedicated spiritual life does not demand that we give up our
normal activities. You can do it in urban areas just as easily as you
can in forests or temples. The focus is on meaningful connection, not
on geographical location. This means being aware, not necessarily
doing something.
If we live in harmony with the universe, it leads to a life filled with
grace. Following such practice offers peace, better understanding,
and happiness. This profound sense of being gives our lives a feeling
of purpose within the larger tapestry of existence.
