Human beings have a very different relationship to the concept of truth these
days than they used to in ancient times. We often teach young children the
importance of speaking the truth and pose it as an essential moral value.
However, during the Vedic times, truth was not simply considered a moral
value or an insistence on maintaining factual accuracy. The Upanishads
clearly state that truth is the most vital path to the awakening of the soul. The
word Satyam indicates an ultimate reality, or that which exists and has
existed across all eternity. Therefore, truth, according to the Upanishads, was
something far more sublime and deeper than simply being honest in one’s
speech. To live in accordance with Satyam was the same as aligning oneself
with the natural reality as it authentically exists. Such an alignment is the
ultimate path to self-realization.
Ignorance Is Cause Of All Human Suffering:
One of the things that has been reiterated in the Upanishads again and again
is that ignorance is the cause of all human suffering. It is to be understood
here that ignorance is not simply one’s failure to consider what is relevant,
but a fundamental mistake in identification, such as considering the transitory
to be eternal, or the physical body for the ultimate form of the Self, or
believing that appearances are the true representation of reality. Satyam or
truth leads people away from such mistakes and guides them to the path of
authenticity. It guides the pursuer to the course of the unchanging, the
eternal, and the real by means of shedding away all misapprehensions.
Importance Of Accepting Satyam:
The Taittirīya Upanishad directs the reader to align with the truth. It preaches
to the seeker to always live righteously. Truthfulness in this context is not
simply a social etiquette, but more of a form of spiritual discipline.
One’s thoughts, speech, and actions should align with truth so that the
person’s inner world becomes completely coherent with their being. Such an
inner coherence is considered vital. It is indispensable for the person to
become prepared to accomplish a deeper inquiry into his emergent and
unfolding self or aatma.
Satyam And Its Inverse Relationship With Ego:
Brahman signifies life, consciousness, and bliss. It is the ultimate reality.
Satyam is also meticulously connected with Brahman in the Upanishads.
Therefore, to walk the path of truthfulness is the same as to know Brahman.
This makes falsehood not simply an ethical failure, but represents
identification with the illusory and the unreal. Every time a person deceives
someone, it makes the ego strong. On the other hand, truthfulness works to
weaken the grip of the ego on one’s consciousness.
Importance Of Satyam For Getting Clarity:
By choosing Satyam consciously and consistently, a person can remove the
negative impact of the ego that hinders self-knowledge. Devoting oneself to
the path of Satyam also results in the illumination of truth in overall
perception and understanding. One learns the skills to question all kinds of
inherited beliefs, dogmas, social roles, and also sacred rituals if they
somehow prevent direct realization of the eternal truth. In this way, one can
understand what radical truthfulness is all about. It enables an individual to
develop the inner strength to overcome misconceptions and misconceived
notions about the Self.
