Truth in contemporary discussion is frequently narrowed down to verifiable
facts, data points, statistics, or observable events. Vedanta, however, draws
a radical division between the facts and Satyam. Whereas facts explain what
we see, Satyam explains what is. Vedanta emphasizes that unless this
difference is known, a person may be familiar with a lot of facts but still
ignorant of the truth. Satyam is not knowledge; it is reality.
The Vedantic Framework of Truth
Vedanta does not refute the facts of empiricism; however, it places them in a
broader context of reality. Knowledge is judged not only in terms of accuracy,
but also permanence, independence, and self-existence. The concept of truth

Satyam is not an object of objects. It is pure being (sat) and consciousness
(cit). Although facts determine the existence of a knower, Satyam is the
ground that enables knowing.
The Test of Truth in Vedanta

Permanence Over Change
Vedanta uses a very basic but significant test: That which is subject to
change cannot be ultimate. Bodies are mutable, thoughts change, and even

on anything because it is already inherent that it is svatah-siddha.
Illusion, Appearance, and Truth

reality. The world is not false, nor absolutely true.
Dream and Waking: A Classic Analogy
As long as it exists, there are facts in a dream. But when it wakes, its reality

Satyam is realized.
