Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is a serious workplace hazard that requires more than basic awareness. It can occur unexpectedly in industrial environments, particularly where workers handle crude oil, natural gas, wastewater, sewage, chemicals, or other organic materials. Since H₂S is colorless and highly toxic, workers cannot depend on their senses to recognize a dangerous atmosphere. A strong prevention strategy therefore requires hazard awareness, atmospheric monitoring, appropriate controls, and effective emergency preparedness.
