Power cables are utilized for the transmission of electric power to transmit power from substations to the required locations. These cables can be installed overhead or underground according to the requirements, it is a convention of two or more conductors, protected with an external coating known as insulation. Here are the different types of Power Cables:- 1. Belted Cables In these cables, the conductors are rolled with oil-impregnated paper, and then the scores are compiled with filler material after that the assembly is surrounded by a paper insulating belt. They are utilized for voltage range up to 11kv or could also be used up to 22KV. Above 22KV, it might lead to tangential stress. 2. Screened Cables These cables can be used up to the voltage ranging to 33KV, and can also be extended up to 66KV. Screened type cables are distributed into two types they are: ● H-type cable No paper belt is used in this type of cable. Each conductor in this cable is shielded with paper and covered with a metallic screen known as aluminium foil. ● S.L type The cable is shielded with an impregnated sheet and each of them is covered with a separate protective lead sheath. There's also cotton tape covering 3 cores together using a proper filler material. The only difference between the cables is that a common lead sheath covering all the three cores is absent in SL-type cables while each core is provided with a separate lead sheath. This enables the bending of cables as per the requirements. 3. Extra-High Tension Cables In solid cables, there's a diverse arrangement for avoiding void formation, and enhancing dielectric strength is not provided. Those cables can be utilized to power flow maximum up to 66 kV level. Well, Extra High Tension Cables are aimed at 132 kV to 275 kV voltage points. 4. Oil-Filled Cables This cable comprises a concentrically abandoned conductor but is established around a hollow cylindrical steel spiral core. The hollow-core acts as a channel for oil in the conductors. This type of cable is divided into three categories: ● Single conductor channel ● Single core-sheath channel, ● Three core filler space channels. 5. Gas-Filled Cables These cables are triangular and are inserted in steel pipes. Then the tubes are filled with nitrogen at 12 to 15 atmospheric pressure. Due to such high pressure, there is a radial compression that leads to the elimination of ionization. Power Cables can be inducted as durable wiring within buildings, concealed in the ground, run overhead, or uncovered. Termination of these types of cables is simple and cheap.
