What Are The Types & Stages Of Melanoma
Melanoma is a form
of cancer that
develops in the
body’s melanocytes.
These are the cells
that produce the
pigment melanin,
which gives color to
your hair, eyes, and
skin. Melanoma
usually begins as an
abnormal growth of
melanocytes in one
area of the skin. It
can spread to other
parts of the body
through lymph
nodes or blood
vessels.
Types of Melanoma:
• Melanoma can be categorized into 4 types: superficial spreading melanoma (SSM),
nodular melanoma, Lentigo maligna melanoma and Acral lentiginous melanoma.
Stages of Melanoma:
Melanoma can be staged from 0 to 4. The higher the stage number, the more advanced
or dangerous it is.
Stage 0: Doctors refer to this stage as “melanoma in situ,” which means that the cancer
is present only in the outermost layer of skin.
Stage 1: Stage 1 cancer is up to 2 millimeters thick but has not spread to lymph nodes or
other sites. It may or may not be ulcerated.
Stage 2: The cancer is at least one millimeter thick. It may be thicker than four
millimeters and may or may not be ulcerated. It has not yet spread to lymph nodes or
other sites.
Stage 3: The cancer has spread to one or more nearby lymph nodes or to nearby
lymphatic channels but not to distant sites. The tumor may no longer be visible. If it is, it
may be thicker than 4 mm and also ulcerated.
Stage 4: Cancer has spread to other parts of the body, including distant lymph nodes
and organs like the brain, lungs, or liver.
