Introduction
DIN is a unique Director identification number allotted by the
Central Government to any person intending to be a Director or an
existing director of a company.

Identification Number
(DIN)
It is an 8-digit unique identification number that has lifetime
validity. Through DIN, details of the directors are maintained in a
database.

Purpose of a DIN
• The Director Identification Number provides a unique identity to
the director helps in maintaining information of all directors in a
database.
• In past decades, several Indian cities have had chit fund
companies promise its residents incomparable returns, then
escape with their money to another city.

Usage of DIN
Whenever a return, an application or any information related to a
company will be submitted under any law, the director signing such
return, application or information will mention his DIN underneath
his signature.

DIN Application
Procedure
• SPICe Form: Application for allotment of DINs to the proposed first
Directors in respect of New companies shall be made in SPICe
form only.
• DIR-3 Form: Any person intending to become a director in an
already existing company shall have to make an application in
eForm DIR-3 for allotment of DIN.
• DIR-6 Form: Any changes in the particulars of the directors shall be
filed in form DIR-6.

How is DIN
Number Allotted?
• The central Government and its delegated authority process and
authenticate the received Form DIR-3. Among other things, they
consider the rules given in Section 154 of the Companies Act,
2013 and Rule 10 of the Companies Rules 2014 (Appointment and
Qualification of Director) when considering DIN number allotment
to an applicant.

What if the Application of
DIN Allotment is Rejected?
• If the Application form of DIN Allotment has been rejected due to
the submission of any wrong or misleading information in the
form. The central government permits a time limit of 15 days to
rectify it. Within this given time period, the person has to fill and
submit a fresh form with all the correct details.

Common Reasons
for DIN Rejection
• Applicant’s name and father’s name mentioned in abbreviated
form. – Expand the Name even if the ID proof contains the name in
abbreviated form.
• Mismatch in the Name and Father’s Name in DIN form with the ID
(Identity) proof enclosed. – Any mismatch in Name, including
spelling mistake, may lead to rejection of the application. It
accepts the minor spelling deviations in the father’s name if such
deviations do not materially impact the name.

Common Reasons for
DIN Rejection Cont.
• Prefixes like Mr. / Ms. / Kumari / Shri etc. used in the applicant’s
name.
• Residence proofs like Bank Statements, Electricity Bill, Telephone
Bill, Utility bills etc. submitted are older than 2 months of
submitting the application for verification OR such documents are
in the name of some other person, for example, father or spouse.
