When we go out shopping at a grocery store or a big grocery mart, we 
usually pick up things according to our things and most of the times, put 
the required items into the cart without actually reading the packaging of 
the  item  either.  As  customers,  we  usually  have  faith  in  the  producers

 What Is Shelf Life Study? 
Shelf  life study is  the process of finding out how long the product will 
remain  intact  and  safe  for  somebody’s  consumption  until  the  seal  is 
broken. It also judges the reaction of the preservatives and what the life 
of the preservatives is. Preservatives are the artificial ingredients that are 
sometimes added to packaged products in order to keep them fresh and 
safe  for  a  person’s  consumption  even  after  a  few months.  It  has  been 
made  mandatory  by  the  FSSAI  that  all  producers  print  the  date  of 
manufacturing and the expiration on the product.

Other Tests
Shelf life study is only one among the many tests that are carried out by 
the certified food labs. The FSSAI has made it compulsory, for the safety 
of  the  consumers,  that  all  food  and  beverages  that  are  going  to  be 
processed, should be and have to be tested at any of the food testing labs 
that  are  recognized  by  the  FSSAI.  These  tests  include  the  tests  of  the 
nutrients, test for adulteration, heavy metal testing of the food items and 
so on. Without this, no packaged product can be kept on the shelf of any 
store for selling.

If you turn the product and  look at  the back of  the packaging, you will 
find  a  detail  list  of  the  ingredients  and  the  nutritional  value  that  the 
product has. Along with that, they also have the benefits and cautions too 
(sometimes)  of  using  the  product. All  these  things  are  ascertained  and 
confirmed by a particular food testing lab before the product is launched 
in the market and made available to consumers to buy them.
