What Are The Tests That Your Product Goes Through
Before It Reaches You?

O ur Dependence On Packaged Food
Most of us today are heavily dependent on packaged food in our daily
lives. But did you know that each of this food item needs to go through
various series of tests before it can actually reach the shelf of the
supermarket near you? In the past, people have contracted food
poisoning through packaged goods just because it was not screened
before it was sent for selling. Today, in almost every country, it is a
compulsion and legal obligation for any packaged food or drink
producer, to have the product testing in a laboratory.

Tests Done
The tests that are generally carried out on these food items are testing for
residues of any antibiotics (especially in case of milk), traces of
pesticides or fertilizers, adulteration that may have happened at any
level, shelf life test which involves the
preservative efficacy challenge tests, where the preservatives that are
used to keep the food products fresh are tested. They also carry out
nutrition testing, to ascertain the quantity of nutrients present in the food
product. Knowing the nutrition content of any food product is a
consumer right too.

Consumer Safety
Each of these tests is important so that the consumer has an assurance
that the food product that they are putting in their cart is tested and is
safe for consumption. If at all there seems to be a breach on the testing, it
becomes a legal case. Well remember the case of Maggie noodles few
years ago when there was high amount of lead found in the preservatives
of the noodle pack. This resulted in a long time ban on the product,
which led to huge loss for Nestle. Therefore, choosing good testing and
method validation labs in India are very important.

Mark Of Standardization
In India, it is also compulsory to have the mark of FSSAI on the
packaging of the food product. No matter how big or small the size of
the product is, this mark is compulsory as it states that the packaged
material has been tested under the FSSAI regulations and there is
absolutely no harm in consumption of the product. Along with this, the
food product needs to have a list of its ingredients and the date of expiry
as well. This helps the consumer decide whether to buy it or not.

Your Duty As A Consumer
As a consumer, what you can do to ensure safety of the food products is
to check for the mark of standardisation whenever you buy a food
product. Also, check for the ingredient list, in case you have allergy to
any of the ingredient or the preservatives. Also, do check how long is it
before the product expires. While it is full duty and responsibility of the
manufacturer to provide safe food to the consumer, but as a consumer
who is aware, the least one can do is check for these things.
