COMBINED DEFENCE SERVICES
  The CDS exam as we are all familiar with is the 
exam administered by UPSC for the recruitment of 
officers of the Indian Defense Forces such as 
Army, Air Force and Navy. CDS exams are offered 
twice a year. Open to young graduates from all 
disciplines. Once selected, candidates undergo 
military training at their respective academies.

CDS EXAM ELIGIBILITY
Nationality
 Citizen of India
 Subject of Bhutan
 Subject of Nepal
 Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 
1962, with the intention to permanently settle in India
 Person of Indian origin who has migrated from 
Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka & East African Countries 
with the intention to permanently settle in India.
 Qualifications:
 I.M.A . and Officer Training Academy - Accredited 
University or Equivalent Degree.
 Indian Naval Academy - Technician Graduate from 
an Accredited College/ Institution.
 Indian Air Force Academy - Accredited College 
Degree (Physics and Mathematics Level 10+2) or 
Bachelor of Engineering.
 Students who are in their final semester and have 
not passed the final exam can also apply.
Age Limit
 19 To 24 Years, Indian Military Academy
 19 To 22 years at the Naval Academy
 19 To 23 Years Air Force Academy
 19 To 25 years old, Officers Training Academy
CDS SYLLABUS
      The CDS syllabus was created by the concerned 
Central Defense Services officials to test 
candidates on the basis of their intelligence, 
persona, and grammatical prowess.  It is divided 
into the following divisions for IAFA, INA, and IMA 
posts:
 English
 General Knowledge 
 Elementary Mathematics
 Candidates are chosen for the OTA positions 
based on their proficiency in English and general 
knowledge.
CDS SELECTION METHOD 
Written Exam 
  The first stage of the CDS selection process is the 
written test which includes three papers - English, 
General Knowledge, and  Elementary Math's. CDS 
written exam will be objective in nature, with a time 
allotment of 2 hours for each paper.
 A candidate who will qualify for the written test will 
become eligible for the second stage of CDS 
 
SSB Interview
  CDS Interview  is a 5-day process that involves 
intense scrutinization of candidates covering all the 
major aspects of the overall personality.
 Candidates are judged physically, mentally and 
psychologically as well. However, before 
undergoing stage 2, candidates must appear for 
stage 1 tests. 
 The Officer Intelligence Rating & PPDT is a 1-day 
program. Candidates are  scrutinized for their 
verbal and non-verbal abilities.
Documentation Validation
Following the SSB interview, the shortlisted 
candidates were contacted for document 
verification. .The listing of documents that must be 
provided for verification is shown below:
 Birth Certificate
 Academic Degrees (HSC, SSC, Graduation etc)
 Certificate of Eligibility for certain   candidates
 Passport size photograph
 Identity proof
 Residence proof etc.
 Cast or category certificate (SC, ST, OBC, PH etc)
Medical Exam
 The candidate is subjected to a medical 
examination by the Board of Service Medical 
Officers after being shortlisted in the rounds. The 
CDS selection process ends with this stage. This 
examination is being used to make sure that 
perhaps the shortlisted candidate meets UPSC 
physical criteria.
