Bachelor’s Degree From Rutgers University
After earning a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers 
University, Dr. Joseph Markowitz earned his 
medical degree from the University of Medicine 
and Dentistry of New Jersey’s Robert Wood 
Johnson Medical School. He advanced his 
education at the University of South Carolina 
School of Medicine by completing a psychiatry 
residency, then attended the University of South 
Florida School of Medicine for an addiction 
psychiatry fellowship.
Board-Certified In General Adult Psychiatry
After graduating from a bachelor’s degree program 
at Rutgers University in New Brunswick with the 
highest honors, Dr. Joseph Markowitz continued his 
education by earning his medical degree from the 
Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at the 
University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. 
He is board-certified in general adult psychiatry 
and addictions psychiatry and works as a 
psychiatrist at Palmetto Health.
Teaches Psychiatry Courses
Following the completion of a Doctor of Medicine degree 
from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Dr. 
Joseph Markowitz explored research in substance abuse 
pharmacotherapy while receiving professional training as 
a psychiatric resident at the University of South Carolina 
School of Medicine. He considers addiction to be one of 
his foremost research interests and currently teaches 
psychiatry courses at the University of South Florida. 
Interest In Treating Patients
6.While completing a psychiatry residency at the 
University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Dr. 
Joseph Markowitz conducted research on the 
pharmacotherapy of autism and the pharmacotherapy of 
substance abuse. His interest in treating patients with 
substance abuse disorders led him to spend seven years 
working as a psychiatrist with added qualifications in 
addiction psychiatry at James A. Haley VAMC.
