TECHNICAL GUIDE / INDUSTRIAL EMISSION CONTROL
Acid Gas Removal Systems: Technologies
for Industrial Emission Control
Acid gas removal systems are designed to reduce acidic gaseous pollutants in industrial exhaust
streams before they are released into the atmosphere. Depending on the process, these pollutants
may include sulfur dioxide (SO■), hydrogen chloride (HCl), and hydrogen fluoride (HF). The
appropriate treatment technology depends on the gas composition, operating conditions, and
required emission performance.
Industries such as chemical processing, metals, power generation, waste treatment, and mineral
processing may require dedicated acid gas treatment as part of their broader industrial emission-control
strategy.
How Does Acid Gas Removal Work?
Acid gas removal involves transferring pollutants from an exhaust stream into a suitable liquid or
reactive sorbent, followed by chemical neutralization or another separation process.
In a wet scrubbing system, contaminated gas contacts a liquid containing a suitable reagent. The
acidic compounds dissolve into the liquid and react according to the selected treatment chemistry. A
mist eliminator then removes entrained droplets before the treated gas exits the scrubber.
Dry and semi-dry systems use alkaline sorbents to react with acidic pollutants. These technologies may
be suitable where water use, wastewater generation, or plant configuration influences the choice of
treatment.
Common Technologies for Acid Gas Control
The main technologies used for industrial acid gas removal include:
● Wet scrubbers: Suitable for many soluble acidic gases and applications requiring liquid-phase
absorption or neutralization.
● Dry sorbent injection: Introduces a reactive material into the gas stream to capture selected
acidic pollutants.
● Semi-dry scrubbing: Combines gas treatment with reagent injection and controlled moisture to
promote pollutant removal.
● Flue gas desulfurization (FGD): Specifically designed to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions from
suitable combustion and process-gas streams.
Each technology has different requirements for reagent consumption, water use, pressure drop, residue
handling, and maintenance.

Factors Affecting System Performance
Effective acid gas treatment requires accurate characterization of the exhaust stream. Engineers
evaluate pollutant concentrations, gas temperature, flow rate, humidity, reagent reactivity, and the
presence of other contaminants.
Material selection is critical because acidic gases and treatment chemicals can create corrosive
operating conditions. For wet scrubbers, liquid distribution, pH control, circulation rate, and mist
elimination influence performance. Dry systems require careful control of sorbent dosage and reaction
conditions.
Where exhaust contains both particulate matter and acidic gases, the treatment arrangement may
integrate baghouse filters, electrostatic precipitators, or other particulate-control equipment with the
acid gas removal stage.
Integrated Industrial Gas Cleaning
Ecomak develops engineered air pollution control equipment and gas-cleaning solutions designed
around industrial process requirements. The appropriate acid gas treatment arrangement depends on
the pollutants present, the operating environment, and the required level of control.
Integrating the right removal technology with effective gas handling, monitoring, and residue
management helps support reliable industrial emission control over the operating life of the system.
Technical note: Technology selection and operating parameters should be based on process-specific data and applicable
engineering guidance.
