Introduction
Large scale poultry farming requires huge investment.
Process of egg production, the process of broiler breeding, equipment to be used,
etc.
Are some of the components that classify the industry into small scale, mid-scale,
and large scale.
Marketing strategies, advertisement techniques, details of business land or space,
packaging information and its cost, type of birds to be used all depend on the scale
of the business.
These adopt advanced technologies to meet the growing demand of the
increasing population.
Large Industry In India
Countries such as the US, China, Russia, and South Asian countries
like India are regions where large-scale poultry industries are seen
widely.
The largest poultry population is found in Andhra Pradesh in the
country.
This is followed by states such as Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, West
Bengal, Karnataka, Bihar, Orissa, Kerala, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, and
Punjab.
The large-scale poultry industry is also found to flourish in urban
areas like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Kolkata, Delhi, Chandigarh,
Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Shimla, Ajmer, etc.
In rural areas, the per capita consumption of eggs is only 7.7 per
annum in comparison to 17.8 per annum in the urban areas.
Requirements Of Large Scale
Poultry Industry
Large scale poultry farming requires a huge investment for
equipment and management.
1. Chicken Breeds
2. Feed
3. Housing
4. Equipment
Chicken Breeds
A wide variety of breeds are used for commercial production of eggs and meat.
These include:
Commercial broiler strains:- Hubbard,
Lohman, Anak 2000, Avian -34, Cobb, etc.
Commercial layer strains:- Bowans, BV-
300, Bowans, Hyline, Dekalb Lohman etc.
Feed
It is important that the feed used for
large-scale poultry farming is rich in
protein and other nutrients such as zinc,
phosphorous, manganese, magnesium,
etc.
The feed must also contain adequate
vitamins such as vitamin C, D, E, and K.
Housing
In case of large-scale poultry farming,
coops, and cages are used for keeping
the poultry birds.
A chicken barn in such cases is
usually about 66 feet wide by 500 or
600 feet long and houses around
30,000 birds.
Separate breeder houses may have
hens that lay eggs where they are
incubated and hatch after about 21
days Chickens are sent to market
when they are 32 to 63 days old.
This mainly depends on the size of the
bird.
Equipment
Feeders, incubators, laying nests and egg
handling nests are some of the common
large scale poultry farming equipment.
Many large scale farmers are turning to solar
power, changing their lights over to LEDs,
harvesting rainwater, or utilizing fans to
circulate air to ensure the comfort of
chickens.
