Coordinate measuring machines, also called CMM, are used to check the dimensions of manufactured parts in a 
simplified, and often automatic, delivery of manual checks made using traditional measurement tools such as 
micrometers and altimeters. There are several styles of CMMs but they all mainly use sapphire or lip with similar 
heads, laser probes or similar non-contact, which travels around the part and captures the coordinates of surfaces and 
features on the go. These are then compared to the CAD file the part was designed in. CMMs can be manual or fully 
automated.
Although the measurement mechanisms remain the same in the machinery group, CMM is categorized by its 
structure, with strengths and weaknesses of each pattern.
