In Geology, the word marble refers to metamorphosed limestone. The marble 
stone is commonly used in carving stone sculptures and in constructing 
buildings. This naturally existing marble stone is made of non-metamorphosed

opposite side of the marble

that the marble slab is brittle.

unsuitable for use in areas 
frequently used.  
Absence of holes
Hold the well-polished marble slab at a 45-degree angle under bright 
light. If there are small dull patches, then there are small holes filled 
with epoxy or resins. Often, lower graded Thassos White marbles 
require these fillings.
 
High graded marbles have no holes. It is best not to use marbles with 
fillings since those come off over time. Then, homeowners have to 
patch up the holes to save marble slabs from more damage. Fillings do 
not match the color of natural marble.  
 
No lines on the top surface
The top surface of the marble slab has 
deep lines. Turn it and search for holes 
on the reverse side. Marbles like Crema 
Marfil get holes running deep, and these 
cause cracks on the top surface. These 
marble slabs with small holes can be 
used on walls. 
Learn the full name and hardness 
factor
Ask the full name of the marble used in 
the slab. For instance, Thassos AAA is a 
higher graded marble than the standard 
Thassos. Find out the hardness factor of 
sculpture, but that does not guarantee 
the high quality. 
  
Marble with high hardness factor and 
fiber-glass resin mesh is lower than 
marble with low hardness factor. 
Acid degradable
Acids react with marble’s calcium 
carbonate to form carbon dioxide and 
water. Even a weak solution of 
Vinegar (Acetic acid) reacts with 
marble slabs. 
  
Microbe degradable  
Scientists discovered bacteria and fungi degrade marbles in Milan 
Cathedral. Methylophaga Murata bacterium of Haloalkaliphilic 
Methylotrophic destroyed marble in Kremlin. Cladosporium uses Melanin to 
feed on dried-up acrylic resin.
