Bedaquiline is an oral antibiotic that is specifically utilised in the treatment of pulmonary multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in adults and adolescents, especially when a structure of effective treatment is not possible to develop. It is mostly used in treating TB strains that are resistant to the strongest first-line drugs i.e. isoniazid and rifampin. Bedaquiline is a new category of antibiotics called diarylquinolines and serves by blocking the mycobacterial enzyme of the ATP synthase which is a vital part of bacteria energy synthesis.
