Radial Drilling
Machine
Radial Drilling Machine is a heavy machinery tool, primarily used for
making round holes in mediums to large and heavy workpieces. these
machines are used to drill holes in a given radial distance. It is mainly
used when the component’s size is larges in height. A radial drilling
machine is a cylindrical geared electric drill head that is mounted on an
axial armature that can rotate up to its full extent to bore into any
substance. Since heavy work cannot move much, the radial drilling
machine is made in such a way that the machine tool can move any part
of heavy work without doing much work. This technology is perfect for
drilling, boring, reaming, tapping and counterboring very large and
heavy parts of different metrologies.
Working Principle
of
Radial Drilling Machine
When power is supplied to the motor, the spindle rotates,
causing the attached stepped pulley to also rotate. On the
opposite end, a stepped pulley is attached, which can be
inverted to increase or decrease the rotational speed. A V-belt is
installed between the stepped pulleys for maximum power
transmission. Now, the drill bit that was placed in the fixed
workpiece is connected to the spindle. As it rotates through the
rotation of pulleys, the drill bit rotates. The spindle is moved
down to advance the drilling process with the help of a
handwheel. After the hole is drilled, the handwheel is rotated to
lift the spindle.
Components
of
Radial Drilling Machine
1) Base
The base is usually made of cast iron. The reason behind this is that when you use
the radial drill for machining, there will be a lot of vibration in it. cast iron has a
remarkable ability to absorb the vibration produced by the machine parts. But that
is not the main function of the base. The main function of the base is to provide
support to the assembly mounted on it.
2) Column
The column is a vertical pillar that is mounted on the rear side of the base. Just like
the base, it is also made from cast iron. The main function of the column is to
support and hold the radial arm assembly. the radial arm that is mounted on the
column is designed in such a way that it can slide easily up and down on the surface
of the pillar.
3) Radial Arm
This is the part that is attached to the column. Radial arm is actually a mechanical
tool which supports the drill head. This part can rotate 360 degrees around the
column. It has so many unique movements that make the radial drill machine
different from any other drill machine.
4) Drill Head
The drill head is mounted on the radial arm and drives the drill spindle.
It engages all mechanisms to drive and feed the drill at different speeds.
5) Motor
The motor is present at the top of the drill head, which drives the horizontal axis. Its
main job is to provide rotary drive to the spindle. The more drill capacity you want
the more powerful motor you will need.
6) Spindle
The main function of the spindle is to support your tool and provide a rotary drive so
that it can easily make a hole in your workpiece without breaking or falling.
7) Table
It is placed above the column. It provides you the facility to hold the workpiece
during the drilling operation. Usually, the table comes in a round or rectangle shape.
