Knowing your skin type is important.  It helps 
you know about which problems you need to 
be most concerned now and in the future and 
which skin products and treatment will be 
most effective for them.  
Your skin type can change over time, as you 
mature.  Where you live and your home and 
work environment (cold weather, dry office) 
can also impact your skin type. 
Four Skin Types
 Normal Skin:  normal skin is neither too oily nor too dry.  It 
is soft, has few flaws, and usually does not require special 
care. 
 Dry Skin:  dry skin generates less sebum and lipids than 
normal skin (protective oils and substances that hydrate 
and protect skin).  It, thus, requires extra moisture to 
build a protective shield against external elements. 
 Oily Skin:  oily skin produces large amounts of 
sebum (oil), which causes breakouts.  Pores are 
large and skin tends to be shiny and acne-prone.  
Puberty, temperature extremes, and stress can 
affect hormones, imperfections, and skin changes. 
 Combination Skin:  as the names suggests, 
combination skin is a mix of both dry and oily 
skin.  Skin in the t-zone area (nose, chin, and 
forehead), tends to be oily, while skin in the 
check and jaw area, tends to be dry.  Treatment 
in the different areas depends on the skin’s 
type.  Combination skin is common.
