Pre-treat a Substrate for Powder Coating the Smart
Way
Cleaning and substrate pre-treatment are crucial steps applied before powder coating in
Dubai. The treatment provides powder adhesion to the substrate, making the coating
performance last longer. Know that your substrate is unique and needs a specific pre-
treatment process. For instance, steel and cast iron require corrosion and rust protection,
and aluminium materials are stripped off before applying the powder coating to the bare
metal. Most galvanized metals require duplex coating. But hot galvanized metal needs an
additional heat-drying step to prevent moisture and air from reaching the substrate
surface.
It is necessary to take into consideration the final purpose of any substrate. The substrate
that survives in a marine environment must have more corrosion and rust resistance than
others. Meanwhile, outdoor applications require protection from weather damage and UV
rays.
Here are some steps intended for preparing a substrate before the coating process.
The Cleaning Process
Firstly, clean off the dust, grease, dirt, paint, and grime from the substrate. When the
surface has deposits and residues, it affects the final finishes. There are diverse cleaning
processes used based on the condition and materials. Some of them are chemical cleaning,
pressure washing, and abrasive blasting.
Rinse
The rinsing stage can remove the chemical remnants from any surface. You can use tap
water in areas that contain fewer sulphates or chlorides. It is even better to use deionized
or osmosis-filtered water to avoid corrosion.
Dry
You can use an oven to air-dry the substrate you choose. Generally, ferrous materials
undergo flash rusting or atmospheric corrosion. When your substrate is kept dry, you can
coat it immediately.
Sealing the substrate
The process of phosphate pre-treatment involves depositing a phosphate layer on the
substrate. It enhances the corrosion resistance of a substrate. Materials like zinc
phosphate, iron phosphate, and zirconium phosphate are used on the substrate.
Consequently, iron phosphate is an affordable choice.
Re-rinse and dry
After the phosphate pre-treatment, rinse the surface again and let it dry.
Mask
The whole substrate does not have to get coated. When the entire substrate is coated,
ensure to mask the products. The masks come in many sizes and shapes. They are
paper- coated or made using plastic films. It protects the areas from contacting the
coating throughout the painting process.
After these processes, your substrate is ready for coating. You can contact Al Faizan
Metal Coating if you want a service for surface coating.
