● One of the biggest deals in the
district cooling industry in the Middle East was struck between
Actis and Dubai Investments-owned Emicool.
● Actis, acquired a 50% stake in Emicool at an equity valuation
of $653 million and a corporate valuation of $1 billion.
● Actiis iis an iinvestment firm based iin London that
currentlly manages assets worth $19 biilllliion and has a
portfolliio of 100 companiies.
● Allthough iit iis iinvollved iin many sectors, iits focus has
been on energy, priivate equiity space, reall estate and
iinfrastructure.
● The ceremony was attended by various
dignitaries of the field including Khalid Bin
Kalban, Vice Chairman and CEO of Dubai
Investments, Abdulaziz Bin Yagub Al Serkal,
Chairman, Emicool and Adrian Mucalov, Actis
Partner along with other senior representatives
from each firm.
● Synergy Consulting was the financial advisor for
Actis while Al Mal Capital PSC was the financial
advisor to Dubai Investments on this deal.
● The deal represents a big step forward in meeting the increasing demands
of the cooling sector by combining the capabilities of both companies.
● Dubai Investments acquired Emicool from Dubai’s Union Properties in 2018
for $136 million.
● Since then, it has focussed on improving
Emcools operations and functioning in a variety
of ways including developing the plant,
enhancing technological applications, and re-
engineering the cost of operations.
● Khalid bin Kalban, chief executive of Dubai
Investments said that these steps have changed
the face of the district cooling sector in the UAE
and with Actis stepping in, the sector will
definitely grow further.
● Emicool which began its journey in 2003 is now
one of the most prominent district cooling
companies in the MENA region providing
energy-efficient air conditioning systems to
almost 2,200 buildings in the UAE.
● It offers its services in many areas including
Dubai Motor City, Uptown Mirdif, Dubai
Investments Park, Dubai Sports City and RTA
Metro Station(Expo line).
● According to the data provided by Global Media
Insight, the size of the district cooling sector in
the Middle East is projected to have an annual
growth rate of more than 9% between the year
2022 and 2028.
● The demand for environment-friendly,
sustainable and efficient cooling systems
already touched the $4 billion mark in 2021.
● Other major players in the industry have also
entered new phases of growth.
● Tabreed has acquired assets in both Dubai
and Abu Dhabi during the past year and
Empower will soon be heading for an IPO.
