HOW IS BLUE LIGHT RUINING OUR SKIN?
BLUE LIGHT- WHAT IS IT?
Blue light is a type of radiation that has a wavelength between 400 nm to 500nm approximately. It is very similar to ultraviolet or UV
radiation and is also called high high-frequency light or HEV (High Energy Visible). It is naturally emitted by the sun, but it can also be
emitted with the help of artificial sources. Computers, smartphones, tablets, television screens, and LED light bulbs are a few of the
artificial sources which emit blue light.
It is also believed that blue light from our digital devices produces free radicals, which accelerate our skin aging process with
hyperpigmentation as the most evident result.
It gets hard for a person or even a doctor to identify the damage caused by HEV light as it does not burn the skin visibly like UV rays.
“Spending four eight-hour workdays in front of a computer exposes you to the same amount of energy as 20 minutes in the mid-day sun.
To put this in perspective, seven minutes of sun exposure at 1 pm is powerful enough to induce immediate tanning, “ says Dr. Murad, a
dermatologist and the founder of Murad Skincare Inc.
INCREASED SCREEN
TIME DURING
PANDEMIC
Ever since we entered the global pandemic, both
scientists and common people have been researching
the side effects of blue light or the high energy visible
light.
The lockdown and home confinement around the
globe have made millions, and millions of people stay
at home and work from there. And people have been
using smartphones, tablets, and laptops to stay in
touch with their loved ones.
HOW IS BLUE LIGHT RUINING OUR SKIN?
We know that scientists are still looking into the effects of blue light on our skin, but it has
been proved that it affects comparable to the damage caused by the sun.
These symptoms are seen in individuals with dark skin tones as well. This would mean that
HEV light radiation should be a concern for those as well who don’t burn in the sun usually.
WHAT SKINCARE PRODUCT WOULD HELP US FIGHT THE EFFECTS
OF BLUE LIGHT?
SPF
In the markets, sunscreens that block ultraviolet A (UVA) and
ultraviolet B (UVB) rays from harming our skin are common. We
must find a sunscreen that would protect the skin against all the
visible light spectrum. One of the components you should look for
while searching for a good SPF is zinc oxide.
• Hyaluronic
Serum
One other thing which is great for fighting
those signs of blue light exposure is
hyaluronic acid. Another benefit of using
this acid is that it HYDRATES your skin
greatly.
•Antioxidant
Serum
Antioxidant serums help our skin by
improving dull complexion, fine lines, and
dryness by pushing away free radicals.
The work of an antioxidant is to
neutralize the oxidative stress caused by
light.
