The urban slums of India are a complicated problem with
multiple reasons. The main cause is the an increasing rate of
urbanization and the migration of urban areas to rural areas
seeking better employment opportunities and higher standards
of living. However, they often end up in informal settlements at
the outskirts of cities with no proper living conditions, essential
services or even infrastructure.
slums of India
• The lack of affordable housing is another major factor that contributes to the
increase in the slums of India. Land prices are high and a shortage of
affordable housing make it necessary for many families with low incomes to
reside in the slums. Furthermore, the inaccessibility of credit access and
financing options that are limited and poor urban planning contribute to the
housing shortage.
• Political and socio-economic elements like corruption, inequality, poverty and
a weak system of governance can also be a contributing factor to the rise of
the slums of India. The majority of people living in slums have no access to
basic services like water, sanitation as well as healthcare and education that
further prolong the vicious cycle of marginalization and poverty.
Environmental issues like
natural disasters
• Additionally, environmental issues like natural disasters, climate changes,
and pollution make the problems worse for the slum dwellers. For instance,
flooding or landslides can cause significant damages to slum communities
which can result in the loss of livelihoods, homes, and homes.
• In order to address the deep cause that lead to urban slums throughout
India A multi-pronged strategy is needed that includes improved urban
planning affordable housing choices and better access to basic amenities
like sanitation, water and healthcare. Combating inequality, poverty and
providing more job opportunities that pay better will also aid in breaking the
cycle of marginalization and poverty which often lead to the expansion of
urban slums
