THE VISION BEHIND THE HOUBOLT 
ROAD BRIDGE 
The need for a new bridge became evident as the Joliet area 
experienced rapid growth in warehousing, manufacturing, and 
distribution centers. The existing road network struggled to handle 
increasing truck traffic, leading to congestion and delays. The 
Houbolt Road Bridge was conceived as a solution—a state-of-the-
art, tolled bridge spanning the Des Plaines River to create a direct 
route for freight and commuters. 
FROM PLANNING TO 
CONSTRUCTION 
The project required meticulous planning, environmental 
assessments, and stakeholder engagement before breaking ground. 
Engineers designed a high-capacity bridge with durability and 
efficiency in mind, ensuring it could withstand heavy truck traffic 
while minimizing environmental impact. Construction involved
